🌻Grinter Farms
- Fruit: 40 Acre Sunflower field
- Where: 24154 Stillwell Rd, Lawrence, KS
- Nearby: KU Natural History Museum
- Status as of 8/31/2023: This is the field at 14755 243rd St, Lawrence (Sunflower General Store). Both fields (other at 24050 Stillwell Rd) is also looking pretty good. Both fields are located about 900 feet apart. These blooms will last about 2 weeks. -tfw THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT/ THIS IS HOW IT WORKS:
-We are a corn and soybean farm, and we also plant a few sunflowers. Farmer Jim (Farmer Ted’s dad) started planting sunflowers in the 1970s to produce biodiesel. (Google the oil embargo of the 70s and you'll understand why.) It didn’t quite work out the way he had hoped, but here we are in the 2020s and we’re still growing them. We were never successful at keeping looky-loos out of the field, so feel free to walk amongst the flowers. These days we just try to control the crazy. Sunflowers seem to bring people joy and we are not about crushing dreams.
-The field does not have business hours (it’s a field!), but if it’s dark or you’re up to no good, go home! Nobody has time for that nonsense.
-Since we’ve been told by many that (over in the UK) there are people running naked in the sunflower fields, I think I must at least mention not to do it here. I feel like I want to make exceptions…but no…
-Week days and mornings are the paths less traveled. Although traffic hasn’t really been an issue since what we have named “Carmageddon" in 2016, to help with any possible issues, try to come at an “off” time.
-The best sunflower is one not picked, so try to preserve the beauty for those after you. If you “accidentally” pick one, just know that they will probably wilt and die before you get home. Also, if you have a kid that just really wants one, be prepared for that same kid to scream when they realize there is a bug on it. This generally happens when you’re driving home… (You’ve been warned!) Also, if you do pick one, please leave a dollar for each in one of the red boxes. As always, weeds are free. Donations are always welcome. (Even if the flowers don’t get picked, there is quite a lot of loss from trampling.) A sunflower in the field only lasts a couple of weeks; a picked one far less.
-***PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS*** Remember that if you're making $ off our field, a donation in the box is a lovely and much appreciated gesture. Don’t set up shop. And PRETTY PLEASE refrain from using the Grinter Farms name on your advertisements. It gives a false impression of endorsement. Also, if you’re sending a series of messages demanding to know the exact date the flowers will bloom, and then demanding that I reply instead of ignoring your demands, I suggest you use fake flowers in a studio. Once again, Mother Nature didn’t consult with me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-We added a whole block of restrooms this year!!! Just kidding! There are no restrooms. It’s a field and we don’t charge admission, so “holding it” is the price you pay.
-If you lost something in the field and it’s big enough to damage a combine…find it! Trust me in that you don’t want to buy us a new combine. At least, I think that's what the person ultimately decided that left me her contact info demanding that I return her ladder once we found it. (It was beginning to rain and she didn't want to get wet while looking.) I merely thanked her for letting us know where to send the bill. Strange! We never did find that ladder...
-If you find a sign that says, "Private Drive," that's exactly what it means. Turn around and don’t go that way. If you see someone driving there, assume that they own the road; or assume that those individuals find themselves immune to rules.
- DO NOT park on the street AT ALL. It’s just not safe and the sheriff doesn’t like it. Consider yourself warned. Also, slow down and watch out for people.
-We love friendly dogs, but not everybody does so please put your fur baby on a leash…and for the love of everything good, please PICK UP after him. They make those doggie doo bags for a reason. And (this is super important) if you are kind enough to bag it, please take it home with you. We don’t have trash cans.
-We would never leave our trash in your yard, so don’t leave yours in ours. Yes, this especially applies to diapers!
-Although we considered planting the field in our climate-controlled superdome this year, we opted for outside in nature. This means it will be hot and buggy. Honeybees are a given and are our friends. We go to great lengths to protect them. They are not at all interested in stinging you as they are just busy doing their jobs. There will be bugs!!!
-No, bees and birds do not draw faces on the sunflowers.
-I can’t stress this enough: There are no restrooms!!!!!!!!!!!! (It’s a field.)
-Our farm is just that…a farm. This is our livelihood. We grow the flowers for birdfeed. They are an actual crop. Nothing makes farmer Ted testier than finding picked sunflowers thrown on the grown. Also please remember that our farm is not a playground. If you see a tractor, round bale, grain bin, barn, semi, or any other equipment; we didn’t put it there to be climbed on or into. Please be respectful.
-After careful consideration, we opted not to put sidewalks in the field. It was a thoughtful suggestion, but we just can’t fit the combine between the concrete paths.
-If you can’t find the answer here, but you’re still questioning whether something is permitted, the answer is probably “no.”
-There will never be restrooms. Ever.
-We do not charge admission or a parking fee and have no intention of doing so. This is not an event or a festival. It is just a crop that we’ve been growing for nearly 50 years on the wrong side of the state. We continue to share our field because, truly, if you have the chance to share joy, why wouldn’t you?
The last and most important thing: ENJOY! Put the phone down and take a few minutes to just take it all in. Look out for one another.
Kindness is contagious.
We are not here for ourselves.
Peace, love, and (of course) sunflowers!
-the farmer’s wife
